"Knotting is an enjoyable pastime. Most people can learn to tie knots and soon acquire an impressive repertoire. Knot tying is as absorbing as reading a good book, and the end product is as satisfactory as a completed crossword or jigsaw puzzle--but with many more practical applications. Everyone ought to know a few knots."
The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots & Ropework, Budworth, 2002
"It is extraordinary how little the average individual knows about the art of making even the simplest knots."
R.M Abraham-Winter Nights' Entertainments, 1932, as quoted in The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots & Ropework, Budworth, 2002
I highly recommend this class for homeschoolers. David has done all the research and prep work. The lessons are outlined and offered in short segments to fit with any schedule. As the student completes each segment, a checkmark appears next to that lesson making it easy for parents to track their child's progress. Quizzes are included and can be used for grading. David is a top-notch instructor. His voice has a good and helpful tone, and his explanations are easy to follow during the video lessons. My kids loved the class and are still putting what they learned into practice.

David is a former member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers and has been interested in knot tying since he was a Boy Scout (...a long long time ago). He enjoys teaching and learning about knots, not only because they are useful, but also because they are fun to learn and practice as a hobby and art form. He believes that everyone would benefit from knowing at least a few basic knots, but he has seen too many people become frustrated and give up trying to learn from drawings, diagrams, and confusing videos. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive, complete, and basic easy-to-follow approach to knot tying, he created this course. He hopes that it will make learning about knots and rope easier and more enjoyable for others- whether they are learning for their personal benefit or need to teach their own students, scouts, or family members. Ultimately, he hopes this course will help others learn how to tie safer and more effective knots and, by developing a good foundation, peak their interest to learn more advanced or unique knots for specialized applications or pursue knot tying as a hobby or art form.
This course is much more than a "how-to" course!
Yes, you will learn how to tie several basic knots that are useful for a variety of applications, but you will also learn about ways rope is made and the common materials that are used to make it.
You will understand the many options available in the hardware store and the pros and cons of each so you can choose the right rope for the job!
In addition to the items just mentioned, this course includes
- "How-to" instructional videos for each knot
- Instructional videos demonstrating ways to apply the knots in real life
- Reference Sheets for each knot - Each Reference Sheet provides important information about the knot at a glance-- information like when (and when not) to use the knot. A picture of the knot. Tips for tying the knot. Alternative names for the knot, and more.
- Quizzes - Finally, don't forget the quizzes. To help you learn and master your new knowledge and skills, short quizzes are included. Don't worry, the quizzes are not graded, and you do not need a passing grade to move on to to the rest of the course. You don't even have to take the quizzes, but I hope you will! They are a fun way to test your knowledge, improve your mastery, and have fun while you learn.
Complete with easy to follow, step-by-step lessons and all the tools you need, this course will help you learn about rope and the basic knots quickly and easily!
David, thank you for offering this course. I was looking for a supplement to our homeschool curriculum and am so happy I found your knot-tying course. I truly appreciate all the time it must have taken to put this course together. It's chock-full of meaningful information and is presented so well. My sons have enjoyed learning about the history of knots and about different kinds of rope and knots as well as the purpose for each. The video demonstrations that accompany the lessons are especially helpful. Our entire family is taking the course. From the oldest to the youngest, we're all learning, practicing the knots, getting outside, and having fun together! We hope you'll offer more life skills classes. This one is excellent!

This course is ok, I guess. It took David way too much time to create it when he had other things to do, like play with me. Chasing the rope and making noise in the background when he was trying to film the course was fun, though.
